A Taste of France: Burgundy & Champagne

Overall, a very good experience. The group dinner in Lyon (Welcome Dinner) was exceptional, with the remaining evening meals ranging from very good to mediocre or less, the fair well restaurant in Paris should be dropped. It felt like the type of place that would serve a high school senior trip, such as Mama Leone's in New York before the play.
The tasting tours were very enjoyable with the best being the Chablis experience with the owner, who was great fun.
I never knew that there were so many Notre Dame Cathedrals, previously thinking that Paris and the university were it. But seriously, the Cathedrals that we visited were very interesting and the local guides added a great deal of information and understanding to the group.
I highly recommend this trip.

Educational and fun

Jean Jacques was an excellent tour director, very well informed, who went out of his way to make sure that everyone had a good experience. Group was small (14 people) which allowed us flexibility in restaurants, etc. Local guides were excellent, and choice of itinerary contained many original destinations not on a standard tour. Medieval town of Perouges was a favorite for several people, and getting to know the city of Lyon was very interesting. Most travelers had been on several other tours, so knew what to expect. All in all, a great experience!

Packing for A Taste of France

A word to the wise: bring two sets of clothing on this tour. Wear your regular size when you begin your trip and bring a larger size for your trip home. Do not miss any of the great food and wine!

Woderful Trip to France

I found this tour to be very well planned. It took us to parts of France that are perhaps not on the usual itinerary. It was fun and informative.
The only negatives: not enough bathroom stops on the days we traveled by bus and the hotels weren't the greatest. I would be willing to pay a little more for better hotels. The location of the Paris hotel was not the best. The Lyon Hotel was dirty.

A Taste of France--little bites

The Taste of France tour covered Burgundy and Champagne well but quickly. We were able to briefly explore Lyon, Dijon, Reims and Paris. The side trips to Chantilly, Chablis, Cormatin Chateau were very nice. I felt like I was able to have a "little bite" of all the areas in order to decide if there were areas I would like to visit again on my own for an in-depth exploration. Suggestions for the future: arrive at overnight hotel with a bit more time before the included dinner; extend tour days to allow 3 nights in each venue which really only means 2 whole days in the city--that would give time for the included tours/activities but also would allow for more time on our own to explore the city before moving on. The food and wine included was delicious but I was a bit disappointed that the "tasting" at the Mercier Champagne cave really only included one glass of one champagne. I might have purchased more champagne if I could have tried several vintages. I loved especially the tasting of Beaujolais at Morgon and our first included dinner in Lyon (even though we were very tired from our overnight flight). Our tour director, Jean- Jacques was excellent! I especially appreciated his willingness to give us a tour of Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris and to find quaint bistros for folks who wanted to dine together while in a city. I cannot imagine anyone going to Paris for the first time and not opting for the 2 night extension. Without it, I feel you really wouldn't have enough time to "experience Paris" (arrival Friday evening, Saturday morning bus tour, Saturday night farewell dinner and departure on Sunday morning). I didn't mind using the Metro at all but would have loved to stay in an arrondissment closer to the main sites of Paris. The tour pace was tiring...up most mornings for an early start, not much opportunity for down time and introspection and assimilation of explored areas until the tour was over. I highly recommend this tour for first-time European travelers and/or those who don't really like independent traveling.

I finally experienced France

Enjoyed much of the tour, especially the food, wine and our fellow travelers.
I found the bus a bit too tight for my 6' 1" frame, especially on the longer drives.
I also found the Air France flight to Atlanta (9 hours) torture.
This was my first tour and first trip to Europe, so I don't have a lot with which to compare it. Cruises are more comfortable, but not nearly as interesting in terms of sights and food.

France trip good

Trip in general good. Placing it during France's busiest holiday week was very BAD. Museums restaurants, sites AIRPORTS/connections toooo crowded.
Tour director did not bother to see if flights ok, Mine canceled and with jammed planes and connecting trains full, it's amazing that I got home.
When I complained re cust. service before trip re 8:30 AM flight from Paris told would be OK and breakfast box. Box got only after demand from 6AM tour members demands and dragging tour dir out of bed to get juice and crackers as we were leaving at 6. Arriving at A/P and told flight cancelled and I could leave l 12 hours later. After my ranting I got on plane 2 hours later. You can not expect seniors (and most of us were) to deal with the extra lines and hasstle all this caused.
Tour director in general helpful otherwise.
I managed better than many seniors because I spoke French and knew Paris well, but for a single senior otherwise one was left to fend too much: getting around /getting lunch/ encouraging doubles to ask single to join.
A Christian /Jewish holy week . No help re services etc.

Falling in love with France all over again

This trip takes you to 4 of the most beautiful and interesting cities of France: Lyon, Dijon, Reims and Paris. While you are there you not only get to enjoy the great art and architecture, but also to sample the best food and wine each area has to offer. I highly recommend this tour to lovers of art and lovers of the great gastronomy that France can offer.

For those who love adventures in new cultures with all the food and wine to go with it this is the trip for you. Key to the success of this trip was the Go Ahead guide. Jean-Jacques made us feel like we had all been friends for years and his experience with the locations and the people of France was invaluable!

taste of france

Very enlightening experience of France's variations. The offerings at the included restaurants and those we chose ourselves were quite different from pre conceptions of French food. The menu of different wines offered at the various cellars was likewise an eye opener as to what is available.
Lyon and Dijon and Reims had wonderful walking centers and the local guides gave useful outlines for exploration.
The tour guide was above average in his overall mastery of his tasks

Tour Director, while friendly, did not provide any commentaries at all.
A Burgundy tasting should be included on a tour titled Burgundy and Champagne.

Tour of France review

Wonderful trip and guide was ourstanding (Jean-Jacque) as well. Covered alot of territory, vinyards, cities, et all and was a wonderful time. The only issues are the quality of the included meals that needs to be addressed (on all GoAhead tours I might add...been on 4). Charge slightly more and go 4 stars at least for the dinners. Balance...keep doing your thing..great.

A Taste of France: Burgundy & Champagne

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Lyon was a gastronomique deight with its covered market displaying various stalls specializing in cheeses, seafood, pastries and meats all beautifully displayed. The covered alleyways which were originally designed for the silk trade during the Renaissance were also used by the resistance to convey secret messages during WWII. The cathedral of Reims where Joan of Arc saw the dauphine crowned king was magnificent and I also was amazed at the 15th century Hotel-Dieu in Beaune which was a charity hospital in the middle ages. It's roof is a riot of Flemish patterned roof tiles. All the vineyards that we visited were wonderful and I learned so much about the process of making the famous Burgundy wines. It was a joy to travel through Frances fabled wine country with its cornucopia of culinary delights.

I left my heart in Lyon, Dijon, Reims, & Paris

Our recent trip to France was fantastic. Lyon - what a beautiful ciy of rivers and bridges, those hidden pasages, that creamy gelato! Our visit to Perouge was a trip back in time to the middle ages. Dijon - I loved our lunch in the oldest building in town- built in 1453. We toured two wonderful Chateaus, tasted some fine wines, ate scrumptious food, toured beautiful cathedrals, visited the champagne cellars in Reims, and saw Paris by night from the Seine. Our tour director did so much extra to make our trip more enjoyable. It was great!
