Egypt, Jordan and Jerusalem, Tour of the Ancients

Admittedly, I am an inexperienced traveler, however, this trip was nothing short of amazing. Joseph went above and beyond his job description to take care of us and expose us as much as possible to his beloved Egypt.. We saw EVERYTHING on the itinerary and a lot more. I really don't know how a traveler could expect more than Joseph gave us.
In my opinion he did his best to keep each one of us as happy and as comfortable as possible. Dealing with so many personalities at once could not possibly be easy. I think he excelled!

Egypt & Jordan Israel extension Great Value

I feel we maximized our time to see as many site that we could explore.
People got to democratically vote to do some extras where time permitted.
When you are trying to satisfy many different opinions on how a trip should be altered to suit their tastes we wer kept on tract to fulfill the tour commitments and only add extras on free time.

Disappointed

Waiting for 40 years to make the trip of a lifetime to see the pyramids turned out to be a rush drive by the pyramids so the tour guide could get the group to a carpet store before it closed. The tour guide did not adhere to the itinerary Go Ahead published but appeared to have his own agenda which was disappointing. I would not recommend the Egypt tour unless a different tour guide was employed and was committed to following the itinerary that attracted you to going on the tour in the first place.

Disappointed by JGorski2
Posted March 31, 2011
I rarely post reviews, but I was so stunned by poster JGorski2's comments that I had to comment. I believe I was on the same tour as JGorski2, and I found the tour and our tour guide Joseph to be fantastic, particularly considering the group dynamic (varying personalities and "American" demands.) I believe we spent a great deal of time at the pyramids, enough so that we were able to climb down to a tomb, ride the camels, and take photos from every angle. How long should we have stayed? What did JGorski2 miss out on? If he/she wanted to spend the entire day at the pyramids he/she should have had a one-on-one guide and not go with a group. To his/her point about the carpet stores, several tour members were pushing Joseph to take them to shopping locations instead of spending quality time at historical sites. He did the best he could to accommodate everyone's demands, without deviating very much from the itinerary. I would have loved to see my same group in Egypt during the recent uprising. I would not hesitate to have Joseph as our guide and protector during that difficult time.

At the top of my bucket list! Treasured Memories!

The pyramids and the Sphinx are magical, the Egyptian Museum's treasures are unequaled in the world. As we moved on to Catherine's Monastery and Mt. Sinai, we entered another world. Whow, what an experience!! We needed camels and Bedouin guides to help us experience this very challenging, spiritual journey. Then on to the Dead Sea---unlike anything on earth. Next came beautiful Jordan. Petra was mysterious and gorgeous. On to Jerusalem to experience the ancient place that is the birthplace to 3 of the world' greatest religions. What a trip! I have traveled to over 35 countries and this trip ranks up at the top of my bucket list. The people of the Middle East were wonderful and safety was never an issue for us.
Joseph Selim was an awesome guide---so knowledgeable, so accommodating, and such a joy to meet and absorb his knowledge of Egypt and Jordan. This was my 3rd trip to Egypt and I will definitely go back.
I would highly recommend this trip to the adventuresome and to the hardy. It is a challenging trip, but a truly awesome experience. This is my 3rd trip with GoAhead--a super tour company. Never a problem---always treasured memories. Can't wait for my next journey with GoAhead and Joseph down the Nile!!!

Take Some, Leave Some

Total disclaimer up front: this was the first tour of this kind I've ever taken. I've traveled through volunteer organizations before, but those have placed me in rugged locations (not including side trips) for extended periods of time. In terms of guided bus tours, this experience was new to me, and I didn't fully know what to expect or how the tours are managed. There's the grain of salt. Take it, if you want.
From the get-go, the GoAhead staff were quite attentive. My friend/travel companion and I had to adjust our tour dates a few times (once when GoAhead canceled our tour a few months before the departure), but had relatively little trouble doing so. When I arrived, I was met promptly by a waiting representative, and had no troubles in that respect. The first night's dinner - I was expecting something local, something worth flying to Egypt for - was disappointing at best, standard fare that I wouldn't pay much for in the States, let alone seek out abroad. Unfortunately, that was just the beginning of my dissatisfaction with the tour. I fully acknowledge the difficulty in ensuring that 30 (or more) people make it safely, without getting sick, through multiple third world countries. That said, my friend and I (at 25 each, two of the youngest people on the tour by a wide margin - we were informed it was a predominantly younger tour, but the vast majority of our companions were senior citizens) had been eagerly looking forward to sampling local flavor. We had very few opportunities to break from the group and explore on our own, which resulted in growing frustration at the lack of local culinary experiences. It is indeed quite tough to find a place to accommodate so many foreign travelers, but we felt as though we were not presented with the options promised to us, and we were quickly growing tired of the food offerings. For the most part, we were eating little that we couldn't find in our respective cities here in the States. Similarly, beyond the restaurant selection, we had expected more chances to go out exploring without the group. We flew to Egypt, travel books in hand, but rarely had the opportunity to consult them for side trips, as the schedule allowed less independence. The amount of things we did in Cairo was fantastic, and I wouldn't change that. In Petra and other locations, though, we were rushed back to the hotel at 3 or 3:30 in the afternoon, with hours of sunlight yet to go, and no further plans for the night. Our books lay idle on the desks in our hotel, while time that could have been spent further investigating Petra or the Bedouin villages surrounding Mount Sinai was wasted. We did not fully understand our guide's hurry, nor did we appreciate it in those instances. In some cases, we couldn't help but feel as though some of our time (and, therefore, money) was put to ill-use. Especially when we stopped at high-end stores for an hour, then had to breeze through the antiquities museum in Cairo, I felt that resources were misplaced.
In terms of the sights, obviously this is where the tour shines. We chose the this particular tour over all other options because it included the majority of what we wanted to see in the time we could devote to it. The Pyramids, Sphinx, Petra, and countless mosaics were breathtaking. I hope to never forget the sunrise hike up Mount Sinai or floating in the Dead Sea or diving in the Red.
Would I recommend this tour? For first time travelers especially, it's quite solid. And, I'll admit, though I've been to numerous countries before this, I certainly don't think I would have been able to tackle Egypt and Jordan so extensively and successfully on my own. Not yet. That said, I wish I had gone in with better-formed expectations of the the tour. I had expected a younger group (and felt I had been led to do so) and more time to sample to cultural on a local, without-airs level. Being that my friend and I were so far removed from the age group with which we traveled, we were in a clear minority and unable to request and receive the freedom and level of adventure that we sought. I am so glad I went, and grateful to GoAhead for the ease of travel it engendered, but can't help but feel, at the same time, that I did not fully get what I thought I was paying for.

Egypt: The Tour of the Ancients

This was a wonderful survey of the country both modern and ancient. As with all tours, the gujde makes or breaks the trip. Our guide who also served as tour director was both knowledgeable and personable. He went out of his way to deliver informational commentary and national hospitality. Our other local guides were also wonderful and very helpful. The sites included in the itinerary were great choices. However, we also took all of the optionals and would have been disappointed if we skipped even one. The tour was active with 12 hour days so night life was not needed for us. We spent evenings casually talking with our tour mates and our tour director. The tour met all of our expectations.

Loved Jordan, Egypt not so much

Our guide, Joseph, spent the first day in Cairo taking us to shops. We didn't even get to go to the sphinx, just drove by and got out to take a photo. He was trying to accomodate a few ladies who mainly wanted to shop. Thankfully, this was not our first time to Cairo or I would have been very disappointed. We did enjoy visiting the Coptic church and museum. The hotel in St. Catherines was atrocious, no service, no housekeeping, dirty, broken phone, lights, door locks. I could go on. Also our guide did not give us accurate information about the hike up Mt. Sinai. We should have started earlier and you needed to bring cash for the camels and guides. We liked Jordan much better. We loved the Radisson in Aqaba and the wadi run jeep ride. I also liked the hotel in Petra although others in our group had problems with the showers and drains. Again, I think that the guide should have broken the group in to two to accomadate the slower people. We were rushed to see everything because he was accomodating the slowest people. I have been on many tours and this was our fourth with GoAhead so I understand group dynamics but I guess that security concerns made Joseph keep us together. The kempisnski was lovely.

Joseph Selim Tour Director
Fellt like we got everything out of this trip that could have been done. We did not waste any time and all tour guides/directors were well educated and seemed to really be proud of their countries and what they were doing. The hike up Mt. Siani was really more demanding than I had thought. Could not have made it without help of the Bedowin. Joseph was a great director and worked hard to teach and show us as much as possible in Egypt. The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Israel was looking a little tired. Hotels were great on the whole. Understand that the one at St. Catherine's was the best there was there. I enjoyed the food at all hotels. Hotel on the Dead Sea was fantastic. Free email access made it even better.
Was truly a wonderful trip with no one getting sick, hurt or upset to any degree. Made some new good friends.

This was really an amazing trip. From start to finish we saw and did so much. Our tour director Joseph Selim did an amazing job. This was not like my other trips, he really had to work at his job and was always smiling and accommodating. Joseph knows history and knows how to keep you interested. He kept us safe and well entertained with his quick wit.
From the Pyramids to Petra and Wadi Rum the history, land, sites, animals and people are amazing. Everyone was so friendly, the foods always my favorite were in abundance and the experiences priceless. I always felt safe and welcomed. I was surrounded by 20 kids at the Mosque who were just as interested in me as I was in them! Strangers would smile and wave. Certain things I wish we would have had more time like the Cairo museum but seeing first hand the Tut pieces was amazing. I'd like to have spent time walking the streets of Cairo and finding hidden gems that I like to do when I travel alone but in a group it is different. Two days could easily be added to this trip for a more intimate experience.
Wadi Rum and Petra, climbing Mt Sinai, riding a camel, meeting the locals were all just the best experience. I left this country with new friends and memories that I can't forget. As a professional photographer these are images I will always treasure. I would do this trip again.

Mid East Sojourn

We were so pleased to discover this new tour. We were glad to get a taste of the pyramids and intrigued with unimagined locales in the Sinai and Jordan. We were NOT disappointed. For most Westerners, the pyramids are beyond exotic; and who wouldnt want to spend some time among the treasures of King Tut ? I found my midnight climb up Mount Sinai to be unexpectedly mystical and humbling. This is an adventure NOT to be missed. Jordan was a complete unknown to us, but we enjoyed every
vista. I felt very connected to the long history of the region. I wish that we could have continued on to Israel, but now we have something more to look forward to. Thank you for this wonderful trip.

Great Tour Experience

This trip allowed us to see all that we hoped to and more. The pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Cairo city tour were all well executed. The days were full but we still enjoyed the optional Folklore Dinner with the bonus of seeing a local couple getting engaged with their families traditional ceramonies. We found the trip to St Catherine monastery and Mt Sinai both educational and humbling. Next on to Jordan and what a surprise it was for us to experience. We will never forget the beautiful resorts and the exciting Wadi Rum desert. Petra was amazing and we find ourselves telling everyone this is a "must see". Our guide Joseph successfully made this one of our most memorable trips.

Egypt and Jordan: A Return

My husband and I have been on many Go Ahead tours. This one was special for us, since we had lived in Jordan many years ago, but had never been to Egypt.
The trip, I felt, was as well-planned as you can in a country where timeliness is not that important.and ferries are not on a western-style schedule I did feel safe because of the efforts of our tour guide and the Tourism Police in Egypt. Our tour guide even prepared us to deal wit h the camel hawkers at the pyramids, although some did not take his advice.
When we reached Jordan, we asked Joseph Salem, our guide, to contact a driver to take us into Amman to visit our old neighborhood and tour the city on our own. He made every effort to make all of the travelers comfortable and happy and kept his good humor even when he came down with the same "tummy" problem that several other travelers had.
Mr. Salem was one of the best tour directors we have encountered. In all, it was a fascinating trip that included history and sites important to both Islam and Christianity.

Dream Trip

When our friends heard where we had been, they said, "They hate us there." Quite to the contrary, we were treated warmly and royally. Our guide, Joseph Salem, was great, so caring and gave us so much information about the countries and their customs. Petra was unbelieveable. This was one of the main reasons we chose this trip. The biblical sites we visited made the bible really come alive.
Our hotels were great, especially the one on the Dead Sea. This truly was a "Dream Trip". Thank you GoAhead.
