Amsterdam Review

While I greatly enjoyed the week, I feel that we should have had more time at Keukenhof Gardens as that was the main draw for the trip.

Easy way to see The Netherlands. The flower show is the major reason for going.

Loved Amsterdam!

My daughter and I recently spent time in Amsterdam and opted for the 2 day trip extension. Staying in Amsterdam for the entire time gave us the opportunity to explore and really learn the city from top to bottom. It is a beautiful city with its canals, great architecture and history. The Kuekenhof Gardens was the highlight of the trip and just breathtaking. This was our 5th trip with Go Ahead Tours and they have not disappointed us yet!

outstanding guide

Atto, our German guide was soooo knowledgeable and polite and fun, that we are going to book another tour with GOH to where ever he is guiding. The transportation to all the sites and back and forth to the airport in Amsterdam made my trip very easy. The various teaching venues like cheese making, wooden shoes, diamond factory and Delft pottery were ours to enjoy exclusively and so enjoyable. The two extra days I added to my trip afforded me the chance to visit the Van Gough Museum and many other museums and shops. I would definitely recommend staying over. The food was outstanding especially the cheeses and wines. Dutch people seem to all speak English and were so helpful with directions. I even managed to escape injury crossing over the many tram tracks and cycle paths on my adventures around the city. I want to go right back.

Amsterdam and Keukenhof Gardens

This trip in mid April was perfectly timed. The gardens were beautiful! Seeing them was an experience I'll always remember. The canals, museums, and architecture make Amsterdam an interesting city to explore.

The Tulips were beautiful!

My wife had always wanted to go see the Tulips and the Delftware. So for our 4oth wedding anniversary we planned a trip to Amsterdam. What a marvelous trip it was...Amsterdam did not disappoint!

Just Right

Go Ahead's Amsterdam City Stay is just right: a good value and nice introduction to a fascinating city and culture. We enjoyed the variety of options and the expertise of our tour guide. Our stay at the Movenpick was a highlight with its great breakfast, accomodating staff, and location close to Central Station. Amsterdam's public transportation and walkability were also a plus. Must sees include the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, and Aalsmeer Flower Auction.

Amsterdam City Stay

A good way to get oriented to the city and then be on your own. Movenpick hotel very nice and good location. Everything went well until we arrived at the airport for departure to return home. Not only did we arrive 3 hrs early to accomodate 2 others in the group, we found out when we arrived that our flight had been delayed 3 hours. The delay is something the tour director should have known and should have arranged for us to leave the hotel later. There were only 12 in the whole group, 4 weren't leaving that day, and 2 were leaving later. That left 6 of us. The airport is minutes away. You would think it would have been easy to arrange this instead of us waiting in the airport for 6 hours. A bit of a sour note that could have been avoided with a little effort.

An Embarrassment of Riches

"The Embarrassment of Riches" is the title of a book by Simon Schama on "Dutch Culture in the Golden Age," and it is also a good description of the art, music, and sights we enjoyed on this tour.
Without the extension (which was not available on our tour), the tour was only a few days. But we saw and did quite a bit at a fairly leisurely pace in those few days (thanks in part to very accessible public transportation). We had time to visit the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. We attended two wonderful concerts, one at the Concertgebouw and one at the Muzieckgebouw, a new concert hall that was adjacent to our hotel. Between our visit to the art museums in Amsterdam and the concert at the Concergebouw, we enjoyed a rijsttafel or rice table of small (and not so small) servings of almost two dozen Indonesian dishes.
The optional excursion to The Hague was canceled, but getting there on our own was no problem. We took the train to The Hague, enjoyed walking around the city center, found the house where the philosopher Spinoza lived, and visited the Royal Picture Gallery at the Mauritshuis and saw still more Vermeers, Rembrandts, and other Dutch masters in an embarrassment of riches.
Our tour director Gerwin did a terrific job! He certainly did quite a bit more than we had expected on a city stay. All members of our group arrived at the airport about 7:30 am, and by 9:30 Gerwin had us on a walking tour to get us oriented. The welcome dinner that night was a pleasant walk from our hotel. After the very good city tour and canal cruise the next morning, Gerwin spent the afternoon showing us still more sights. And that evening we had a very pleasant typical Dutch dinner Gerwin arranged for us at typical brown café followed by yet another entertaining and educational walking tour back to the hotel.

Not for me

I knew we were in trouble as we had to wait in Amsterdam airport for other flights to arrive upon arrival. This delayed arriving in hotel. Tour director did not offer much knowledge of customs, history and culture of Holland. I appreciate an informative tour director; she was not.

For Amsterdam

The basic trip to Amsterdam was good but we needed a guide more familiar with the city.
Weather was perfect and side trips were great.
When we arrived needed some suggestions about eating place and what was open for business. We arrived and if I had not been there before we would have wasted precious time like the other members on our tour.

A good jumping-off point for self starters

My daughters-in-law and I ( and my friends) enjoyed the Convent Hotel very
much. The breakfast there was truly sumptuous and a real plus. The hotel
was run like a Swiss watch;it was clean, orderly, the staff accomodating,
and the location perfect.
Since we were too late to book tours through Go Ahead, we found that it
worked in our favor, as we went down to Central Station and bought Hop-On,
Hop-Off canal bus passes, which included two museum passes, and an evening cocktail cruise. It was a joy to be on the water via different routes, so
we got to see many canals that way , and an overall view of Amsterdam.
We also went down to Central Station and took trains to Haarlem, Delft, and
other cities. The included tour of the Keukenhof Gardens at optimum tulip
time was a winner, and our local guide Cristina was articulate and caring.

Dreams do come true

Masterpieces by Vermeer, the Anne Frank House, tulips, windmills, unique architecture, a boat ride on the canal, and bicycles everywhere. Could you be anywhere but Amsterdam?!

Good City Stay

This is a good chance to see Amsterdam in a reasonable amount of time. There was a nice mix of planned activties verses free time so you coud pretty much establish your own pace. I would highly recommend this trip .

Amsterdam, good for body, mind and spirit

This hotel choice was a great one. It was wonderfully located near many sights and the tram was right across the street. There was even a great bakery on the corner with delicious apple turnovers. The walking was excellent exercise- all to see the many canals and quaint mood of the old, shaded neighborhoods. Our guide suggested several eating places at our request and they turned out delicious. The gardens of tulips were more exquisite than any I have seen. Color is so rejuvenating. Thanks for a great experience.

Very nice trip.

With the exception of the visit to the fishing village, all else was as good or better than I expected.
